Our Mission:

1. To promote hands-on participation in events that contribute to charitable causes and community.
2. To contribute financially to a variety of charitable organizations, funds for which will be derived from the "Social Action Tzedakah Fund."
3. To promote social advocacy at all levels of government and community.

Should You Join The SAC?

First things first, you have to have a commitment to making the world (and especially our community) a better place. If you do, you should join the SAC and help us make this happen. You will meet with us once each month to discuss a variety of projects and events that we organize for this cause. You will also help us decide where to donate money from the temple’s social action Tzedakah fund. SAC members incur no financial commitment….just a desire to help repair the world. Come to our next meeting and see if you’d like to help us!

GUN CONTROL / GUN SAFETY
What Can You Do?

Incredibly, each year over 30,000 Americans are killed by handguns, assault weapons and long guns. We’ve witnessed massacres at schools from Columbine (2000) to Virginia Tech.(2007)

What can we do to stop the epidemic of gun violence?

RAC and You:

The Religious Action Center ( RAC) in Washington, D.C.has for years supported legislation promoting gun safety and sensible gun laws. In 2000, under the “umbrella” of RAC, our clergy and busloads of Templemembers participated in the Million Mom March in D.C. Since then, MMM has joined The Brady Campaign in an effort to become better informed and to lobby our representatives on both state and national levels. This is a non-partisan organization which you can reach by logging on to: www.bradycampaign.org and you can also keep informed by checking the RAC updates at: www.rac.org.

Both groups list current legislation pertaining to assault guns, gun show sales, fingerprinting buyers, illegal sales and gun trafficking and suggest simple but effective ways to let your voice be heard. Join Our DarfurRelief Efforts:
This fall, the temple has been busy with projects to support the people of the Darfurregion of Sudan. For one of their mitzvah projects this fall, LaRFTY and the nursery school are supporting the Backpack Project. The Backpack Project, run by Jewish World Watch, provides backpacks filled with books, school supplies, soap, toothpaste and shoes to children in the Oure Cassoni refugee camp in Eastern Chad. The children are keeping track of backpack contributions on several of the temple bulletin boards. When you are in the neighborhood, take a look at how many backpacks they have provided to this important cause! In addition, the nursery and religious schools plan to designate one night of Chanukah as a night where the children and their families give a backpack to a refugee child in lieu of getting a gift. To learn more about the Backpack Project, log onto www.jewishworldwatch.com.

Also…On December 18 at 8 pm, Ruth Messinger, the President of the American Jewish World Service, will be speaking at the Westchester Jewish Center about the role of Jews as Global Citizens and the crisis in Darfur, in a program sponsored jointly by Larchmont Temple and Westchester Jewish Center. The upper-level religious school students will attend the presentation. The LarchmontTemplecommunity is also invited to attend. More information to follow.

For more information on how you can get involved, contact Stacey Creem at stacizon@aol.com or 834-2399.
